Summary : This section explains how to create a Waterfall project in Sanplex, configure project stages, use Gantt and stage list views, and customize stage types and stage lists.

When creating a project, you can choose the Waterfall project type. In a Waterfall project, stages can be maintained and displayed from an overall project perspective through both the Gantt chart and the stage list.

The stage list shows all stages in the Waterfall project together with their key information, and filters can be used to quickly locate specific stages. The Gantt chart provides a visual view of stage scheduling and progress.

I. Create a Waterfall Project

When creating a project, select the Waterfall project management mode. Go to Project > Create Project > Waterfall, complete the required information and access control settings, then click Save.

II. Manage Stages

1. Configure stages for a Waterfall project

After the project is created, the system automatically opens the stage configuration page.

  • Under Stage Type, you can choose from seven types: General, Requirements, Design, Development, Test, Release, and Review. Different stage types provide different functional menus.
  • To reduce setup steps, you can configure a default template in Admin > Feature Configuration > Execution > Stage List based on your actual workflow.
  • Stages at the same level can be reordered.
  • After clicking Save, the system redirects you to the Stage List page.

2. View the Gantt chart (Premium)

Switch the view to Gantt Chart mode.

In the Gantt chart settings dialog, you can configure the display format, visibility options, and form fields shown in the chart.

If a Waterfall project is linked to multiple products, and project requirements are associated with requirements from different products, separate stages can be created for different products when requirement linkage needs to be managed by product. In this case, select Create by Product for the stage type when creating the project.

After the project is created, you can switch between products when configuring stages. You can also switch products in both the Gantt chart and the stage list for viewing.

3. View the stage list

The stage list displays all stages in the project. You can use the action buttons in the operation column to manage a stage, including:

  • Start or close a stage
  • Create tasks for a stage
  • Create a sub-stage
  • Edit or delete a stage

4. Create a sub-stage

Click Create Sub-stage in the operation column to open the sub-stage creation page.

  • Stages can be broken down into unlimited levels.
  • Only the lowest-level stages can have tasks created under them or be linked to requirements and bugs. Likewise, once tasks have been created for a stage, that stage can no longer be subdivided.
  • The status of a parent stage changes according to the status of its sub-stages. When a sub-stage is activated, or when all sub-stages are closed, the parent stage is activated or closed accordingly.

Please note that the workload percentage of second-level stages must not exceed 100% in total. Their planned start date and planned finish date must also fall within the planned start date and planned finish date of the parent stage.

III. View Stages

Click Stage under the project to open the stage list. You can view All, Unfinished, Not Started, In Progress, Suspended, and Closed stages.

IV. Customize Stage Types and the Stage List

1. Customize stage types

By default, the available stage types are General, Requirements, Design, Development, Test, Release, Review, and Other. You can go to Admin > Feature Configuration > Execution > Stage to customize stage types according to your actual working needs. You can modify the default stage types, delete unused ones, or add new stage types as needed.

Note: Only a parent stage of the General type can contain child stages of other types. For all other cases, child stages inherit the type of the parent stage.

The default stage types are shown below:

2. Customize the stage list

By default, the stage list includes the following stage types: Requirements, Design, Development, Test, Release, and Review.

Currently, the default stage list uses the same names as the stage types, with the additional display of workload percentage.

To add stages, click Create or Batch Create to open the stage creation page.

After a stage is added successfully, it can be viewed in the stage list.
